A word with Twirly Mist at his recordstore Æter in Copenhagen

Twirly Mist aka Mikkel Knudsen is an electronic composer and songwriter with a love of edgy sounds, crooner songwriting and experimental but somehow groovy rhythms and synthlines.

Here is a taste of Twirly Mist from his lastest EP, NAT – Sometimes In Autumn.

Mikkel is also launching a new concert venue at Basement in Copenhagen, just next door from Vega. This will be starting some time in August.

Here is some clips from the pre party in collaboration with Morning Bird / Æter alternative + fashion show feat. Taiga Taiga (uk), Chainsaw Eaters, In Curti, Dorcelsius (fr/ger), After party: Murat Üf Yaa (tur) + Frossen Fisk presents: Bandit feat. Neh-Owh dj (electro mash-up).

But other than that he also runs the Copenhagen based recordstore Æter and the Label Neh-Owh Records. So if you’re looking for some good vinyl we highly recommend checking this place out if you are in Copenhagen, probably the best recordstore in town and offcause he also sell our tee’s.

Why do you make music?
Because I don´t have any other hobbies. And I guess it´s human nature to express themselves somehow.

What projects are you currently working on?
I want to make new masters of 8-14 year old tracks and release it on tape. I also want to make a new experimental Twirly Mist LP. And then I want to do some more commercial crowd pleasing stuff with alot of 80´s pop samples, but it still needs to be hard.

What are your favorite genres or musical influences?

I like 80´s synth stuff like Japan and The Cure and I also listen to electro/breakdance records and then I really like electronic experimental beat orientated music like Alva Noto and Kreidler. The Finish Fonal label is also makes really haunting sounds.

Which musicians or bands are on your radar right now and why?
I think Molly Nilsson is something that has been touching my cold heart lately. It´s pretty emotional and all that, but I like it when it´s a little bit over the top sometimes. The primitive dance samples makes it somehow even more sad, because the party is not good.

And then Chainsaw Eaters, great Copenhagen synth/postpunk act. I have booked them a couple of times and it´s really desperate in the best possible way.

Any particular art/books/series/movies you want to recommend?
If you go to the Danish national museum of art, there is a couple of very impressing paintings by Willumsen. When you see them this big and with the real colors they have some kind og physical reaction on me. The colors are kind of psychedelic but the method of painting is also a bit traditional, turns out really well.

Aside from creating your own music, are there other things you’d like to do in your career?
I´ve got a record label called Neh-Owh Records and a little record store in Copenhagen called Æter, fighting hard to make something happening. But right now I would actually like to concentrate a little bit more on my own music.

What’s the last concert that you went to that you really enjoyed?
Little Debbie, Jeepneys and my own labels In Curti turning a random tuesday into something special with noisy postpunk and more danceable sounds at Warehouse 9 in Copenhagen.

Top 3 favorite places in Copenhagen?
Loppen and Mayhem is good for concerts. And then I like just hanging out on Nørrebro where I live, the best place to be in Copenhagen.

Where are you going for your next holiday?
I´m going to small island Anholt with my kids girlfriend and good old friend who´s got some work to do there, I´m looking forward to get away to a quiet place.

What is you favorite candy?
I tasted some Islandic candy that was really good. It´s a mix of chocolate and laqourise
