A talk with Brian Batz from Sleep Party People

We hooked up with our friend Brian Batz from Sleep Party People and asked him a couple of questions. Here ‘s a peep into world of Batz the man behind SPP.

Why do you make music?
I think I’m destined to make music. It’s the only thing I’m really good. It started drumming on my belly the day I got born 🙂

What projects are you currently working on?
I’m currently working with various artists where I’m producing and mixing their songs/albums. A side from that I’m preparing the release of the second album by Scarlet Chives (my other band) and then I’m working on the forthcoming and third Sleep Party People album in between all of this.
Here is the single from the fourthcoming album by Scarlet Chives.

What have been your main inspiration for your upcoming  album?
I started working on the album the day I arrived in San Francisco where I was invited by two awesome producers (Mikael Johnston & Jeff Saltzman) to collaborate together with them on the third album. So the mayn influence on this album has to San Francisco and the fact that I was away from all the ones I love and at some point felt a bit lonely. But otherwise than that I really wanted to record analog and organic so there’s almost no electronic moments on this album. Everything was recorded on “real” instruments and everything is played by me except two or three parts on guitar, bass and violin and we wanted to keep every song under 24 tracks. Just like the old days.

Which musicians or bands are on your radar right now and why?
I listen a lot to Savages and Youth Lagoon at the moment. But also Alain Goraguer has caught my attention at the moment and so has the danish band, Mellemblond.

Any particular art/books/series/movies you want to recommend?
I’m not that big a reader but I’m trying to read Doppler by the Norwegian author Erlend Loe. It’s really good! Actually I’m really inspired musical when I watch series such as Dexter, Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones and Mad Men. Love it!

Aside from creating your own music, are there other things you’d like to do in your career?
I love producing and mixing on others materiel, but also to compose music for films or other artist. It can be a very inspiring process to work on some completely different music than I’m used to. Exciting!

What’s the last concert that you went to that you really enjoyed?
I saw the Danish band When Saints Go Machine on this year SPOT Festival in Aarhus in Denmark. That was mind-blowing in all ways. Such a great live act.

Top 3 favorite places in Copenhagen?
My studio in Valby (copenhagen). Home and in the arms of my girlfriend.
